Caring for teak

Teak is one of the strongest woods there is. It is dense, hard and naturally oily, so it copes well with moisture. With a few habits, your serving board, bowl or wall shelf stays beautiful for years.

After every use

• Wipe the board or bowl with a damp cloth and lukewarm water. Do not use soap, degreaser or scouring products: they strip the protective wax layer from the wood.
• Food left in the compartments? Use a soft brush with water only.
• Dry the wood straight away with a tea towel and let it dry upright, not flat on the worktop.
• No dishwasher and no soaking. Hot water and staying wet are wood's worst enemies: it will crack or warp.
• Do not put it in the microwave or oven, or directly on a heat source.

Every few months: feed the wood

Our serving boards and bowls are finished with beeswax. If the wood looks dull or dry, give it a new coat:

• Clean the wood and let it dry completely.
• Rub in a thin layer of beeswax or a food-safe wood oil (for chopping boards) with a soft cloth. Ordinary cooking oil goes rancid after a while, so we advise against it.
• Let it soak in for a few hours (ideally overnight) and wipe off the excess with a clean cloth.

Stains, smells and small scratches

• Stains and smells: wipe the wood quickly with a damp cloth before anything can soak in. If a stain or smell remains, sand the spot very lightly with fine sandpaper (240 grit) along the grain and then give the wood a new coat of beeswax.
• Scratches or rough spots: sand lightly in the same way and feed the wood again.

Wandplanken

The Teakline wall shelves have a clear, water-based lacquer finish. Dust them with a dry or slightly damp cloth, without soap or other cleaning products. Do not hang them in a room where the wood stays wet for long.

Wood is alive

Over time, teak turns slightly darker and gains a warm sheen. Small differences in colour and grain are part of a handmade product. Keep your wood out of bright sunlight and away from the radiator, and it stays beautiful and does not dry out.
